Late to the Party Empty Late to the Party

At a Christmas Eve Singing and Lighting of Candles

    The children are loud tonight.
    No.  Not Ours. Yours.
We don't bother to shhh them.
    We change seats, focus, and
drop a stink eye toward theIr parents,
    too,
    caught in clamor.
    The birth we celebrate
    must have been as stabled
    as this,
    even without
    microphones or guitars.

Late to the Party Empty Christmas Eve event

Post  Pat Thu Mar 26, 2020 9:40 pm

Smiling.  We want it reverent, don't we...
Line one:  Yours or Theirs??? OURS:  I just didn't know how to think of it.  a blended family or something complicated about the people.  It took me toward the family instead of toward the stable and kids.
    Love the stink eye.
I'm trusting that "too" means the noisy kids and their parents!
    clamor.  Great word.  Noisy!
Stabled.  Smile  Perfect for this poem.
Yes!  And you didn't have to mention noisy sheep, cows, donkeys.
    It's covered.
    I like it.

Late to the Party Empty Stuck on two things.

I agree with Pat. I wasn't sure what "ours" were. I thought "ours" was either you and your wife's kids or "ours" includes the reader. Kinda like when an author or speaker teases, "I know none of our kids would do this, but..." and proceed to teach a lesson that really all of us can understand and benefit from.

Who do you change seats with? Or you do move seats? When I read it the first time, I thought you changed seats with the family with the noisy kids, but I couldn't imagine that either.

I liked the use of "stabled" and "stink eye." I also liked the italic "shhh" too. Well done. I liked the connection of the noisy service to how noisy the first Christmas must have been.

    Thanks for sharing!

as readers.  I went through the exact same thinking as she did.  She told you in a more detailed way.  But, me too.
    But, wonderful poem.

    The children are loud tonight.
    No.  Not Ours. Theirs.
We don't bother to shhh them.
We just change seats, re-focus, and
drop a stink eye toward their parents,
    too, caught in clamor.

    must have been as stabled

You made minor changes.  Helped so much.
One more question:  does "too" have the same meaning as "so" or "also"? If so, I don't think you need the comma.
Maybe I'm just OCD about it.  Or I'm fuzzy about the meaning.
    Thanks,
    Pat
