    Exercise the Right
“Then David got up off the ground.” 2 Samuel 12:20

Being the king is not without privilege.
I can stroll my rooftop and look down.
Why, I can watch her bathe
then send for her.  And in the heat of passion,

set in motion the downfall of man
    after man
    after man
    after the son yet unborn.

    I will hear a story of a well-loved lamb
and passion will arise once again.
    So many want the office
    but wince at the weight.

Fresh off the presses Empty Powerful epigraph

Post  Pat Thu Jul 02, 2020 8:28 pm

Epigraph:  Such huge sadness, then David learned the baby died.  Grief is over.  Life goes on.  Always amazing to me.
At this point, David called the shots on anything, everything except his baby's life.
    Interesting.

    I like the repetition in S. 2 , esp. line 4

I don't know how many readers will get S 3, lines 1 & 2, but the Bible students will.

    Last line:  outstanding

I like the depth of the poem.

    Monologue.  Thank you.

I love this so much! Seems like such a timely poem with the unrest and voting year, but the poem will be timeless too. Well done! I can't think of any criticism. It worked for me.

Fresh off the presses Empty Addendum

Post  Pat Thu Jul 02, 2020 8:46 pm

After reading Rene's comment, I too thought of the unrest in the country, maybe on my first reading.

I had to look up the scripture, of course.

That brought the bigger picture to mind.

Reading this familiar story, I too have always been troubled by David's quick acceptance that his prayers could not save the child. It's one of those times when it seems the innocent party has paid for the sins of someone else. Perhaps a foreshadowing of the ultimate sacrifice of innocence.  Your last line recalls the old saying, "Heavy is the head that wears the crown." It does bring to mind that there are those who want the glory  prestige, honor; but don't want nor have any talent for leadership. I'm always impressed with your ending twist that catches me and solidifies the truth in one turn of words.
