What can you make of this mess? Empty What can you make of this mess?

Post  tsukany Sun Feb 19, 2023 10:42 am

Dis-robe

Having lived all of my life
in the brightness of the equator,
I found requests to choose a coat,
well, strange.  My grandparents

spoke of long, cold winters, filled
with bitterness.  My workmates
wore long sleeves, at the job
and at play.  My closest friends

gather in stained-glass rooms
to listen to more of the same–
the glories of The Cloak. I may
humor them someday,

but not until my tan lines
begin to fade.

What can you make of this mess? Empty I follow....so 'the mess' is understandable.

I laughed at the topic. Fun.
I remember a "cloak closet" in elementary school, NOT that that has anything to do with your poem.  More on this tomorrow.

What can you make of this mess? Empty Here's what I'm making of this:

Post  Pat Mon Feb 20, 2023 3:52 pm

Wow!  Are we really talking about a robe/ overcoat?
Or are we talking about being protected?
Dis-robe, to me, means stripping down.
Is this a holy cloak?  Under the covering of God?
I know that when we come to God and ask for salvation, we must come as we are.
Long sleeves is Not showing arms/self in poem.
In stained glass rooms, maybe in church, we listen to protection if we are believers in Jesus.
I hear "the putting off" of a decision... like tan lines are in the way.  Smiling at "how we look" or the trivial stuff that gets in the way.

Hey, I may not be on the right track! Give me some feedback on that please.

Pat and Sarah Anne

I had hoped to avoid the epigraph. Seems like that was a mistake. Now what can I do to help?

What can you make of this mess? Empty It's all about Jesus. What are we going to do with Jesus.

Thank you for the epigraph.  Yes, it helps the reader to stay focused while reading poem.
Maybe our own past experiences throw us off.  I need the epigraph.

It's about the covering that Jesus offers us when we choose Him. I guess the different cloaks in the poem are about the choices we come across.  Jesus was set on one focus, so He was not really distracted.

The turn after The Cloak is very effective.

I think of The Shack, a novel, as I reread this today. The struggle inside some of us, though we come face to face with The Cloak.

I feel like I'm in the middle of the mystery here.  But the persona seemingly has not yet committed.  Is that right? Not ready to put on THE light, the bright equator light OR HOLY LIGHT.  Still in darkness, like grandparents?

This is timeless.  I like it.  Jesus wants us to choose Him. Internal choice.

We are to prepare ourselves for God's light by putting on Jesus Christ. It's a choice for man.  There are other choices.

i am also reminded of two road diverged in a yellow wood by R. Frost.  It makes all the difference.

Todd, am I getting closer???

What can you make of this mess? Empty I forgot something....

I think Dis-robe means:   Take off all the other options/coverings, and put on the Light of Jesus.  Nothing else is needed.

Tan lines:   He has already been with the Father.   Cool way to put it.

I need the title to be clearer yet. Sad

But for The Cloak, Covering, When... ,  Called, The Calling, Souls, From Darkness to Light, From Bitter to Sweet, Beyond What Most Can See,

Something will pop for you.

Maybe let it rest and come back to it?

Thanks for sticking with this one.  My intent is to "Dis" the Cloak, to speak ill of it.  Alas.

What can you make of this mess? Empty Okay, another stab at this....

Post  Pat Tue Feb 21, 2023 10:52 am

Is the cloak more like the Pharisee approach?  with over 600 rules?

Now, I'm thinking you need a word to clue us into the image in your head.

What are you pushing away? The ugliness in the world?

It doesn't sound like the Cloak of St. Joseph.

I'm now wondering if it's a judgement cloak.  Judges still wear them.

Jesus, of course, rebelled against the religious goings-on, but He set a new goal for us.  Not just the list of "don'ts" .   I don't know if this is where you are headed with this poem or not.

Interesting.

I got so excited because I understood the "Dis" by the second read but also its also a way people alliterate the word this into baby talk but that was left field. Option 1: add a second s to dis(s) or a new title Fashion Advice

What can you make of this mess? Empty I'm still pondering it, too.

Post  Pat Sat Mar 04, 2023 6:18 am

I hear "Be Real"  and "Who Am I??"

Random thoughts:
We stand naked before the Lord.

Words that might help ? came to me:
true, honest, bare

This is one of those complex poems you may stay with for months and keep coming back to...like we find in our lives.

Sarah Anne and Pat

Thank you for the feedback.

Sarah Anne.  wow!  Two great suggestions.  I am not sure which I like better.  I may send this child off and see which title lands somewhere.

Pat...thank you for the compliment.  Smile
